Professional editors are often called upon to take new writers under our wing. Some of us feel an occasional tug to offer guidance to a newbie who shows promise. Others find that editing projects repeatedly turns into time-consuming free mentoring services. How do we know when God is nudging us to act as a mentor and when we are allowing ourselves to be taken advantage of? What boundaries should we draw as professionals? How can we pass on valuable knowledge that is so desperately needed for beginners while still being good stewards of our time and services? Mentoring New Writers will cover all this and more, offering practical tips on when to say yes, how to say no, and how to make a mentoring relationships work.
Instructor’s Bio:
Jeanette Hanscome, author of three books and numerous articles and devotions, has a heart for new writers and truly loves encouraging and guiding them along. She always works some mentoring into her services. She led a critique group in Reno for several years and is co-founder/coordinator of the Mount Hermon Christian Writers’ Conference’s Buddy System for first-time registrants. She has connected with some amazing writers and had the fun of watching them grow and succeed. She has also, however, learned the importance of setting boundaries. For her, mentoring is a balancing act that can be incredibly rewarding when done right.
