Substantive/Developmental Editing: Nonfiction and Memoir
Substantive editing is a challenge for any editor. Not just about grammar and style, a substantive edit requires an editor to think like a writer—while preserving and advancing the author’s vision for the book. It also requires that an editor think like a reader, understanding the needs of those who will read the finished work.
This course will examine the nuts and bolts of substantive editing for nonfiction and memoirs:
It will also address the skills and attitudes necessary in a substantive editor, from commitment to the author’s vision to the importance of tact to the ability to see a work as a whole.
Instructor Bio: Rachel Starr Thomson has authored more than sixteen book-length manuscripts and more than one hundred articles.
